Ostranauts Mods is an independent field manual for finding mods, understanding what they change, and checking installation requirements before touching an important save.

Evidence, not playtesting. The site reports documented mod functions, dependencies, source listings, and verification dates. It does not claim that every mod has been independently tested in-game.

Ostranauts Character Creation Guide

Character creation is a trade between time, skills, traits, money, and the ship that ends your pre-game life story. This guide explains the documented choices without inventing an optimal build.

LAST VERIFIED · AUG 7, 2026READ TIME · 6 MINSTATUS · FIRST PUBLISHABLE KEYWORD
Quick answer: use WORK ON SELF when you want predictable skills and traits, and use SEEK ADVENTURE when you accept a high-variance narrative result. SAVE SOME MONEY spends a full character year for a comparatively small cash gain, while SEEK SHIP moves you toward the ship that ends character creation. Always use REVIEW RESUME before committing because it is free and does not advance time.

How character creation works

Character creation continues until your character owns a ship or runs out of available years. Each paid choice advances the life simulation by one year, so an option can improve the character while also increasing age. The collected beginner material warns that older characters may begin with worse physical conditions, making every extra year a real tradeoff.

The starting ship is also described as one of the largest influences on early difficulty. That means character creation is not only about accumulating traits: it also determines when you stop preparing and accept a hull. The material does not provide a verified universal best age, skill combination, or ship roll, so those values remain deliberately unranked.

SEEK ADVENTURE

Simulates a year through a random narrative encounter. Choices may involve skill checks and can produce strong rewards or serious negative effects, so this is the highest-variance route in the collected material.

WORK ON SELF

Spends a year to buy skills and traits directly. It is the more predictable choice when you know what capability you want, but the character still becomes one year older.

SAVE SOME MONEY

Trades a year for cash. The supplied community summary describes the payout as small compared with earnings from an hour of salvage, so it is not presented as a recommended default.

SEEK SHIP

Spends a year searching for a ship and may present one or two options. Selecting a ship is the point that ends character creation and moves the character into the playable economy.

Review before committing

REVIEW RESUME is the safe information option because it can be used repeatedly without spending a year. Check current money, learned skills, acquired traits, and generated contacts before choosing another life event or accepting a ship. This is especially important after SEEK ADVENTURE because its rewards and penalties are not predictable in advance.

A practical decision loop is to review the resume, identify the largest missing capability, and then decide whether a predictable purchase is worth another year. If you do not have enough verified information to judge a listed trait or ship, leave that judgment marked as 待确认 rather than assuming it is valuable. The final site will link to a separate starter-ship page only after that keyword has enough sourced material to publish.

What happens after character creation?

After taking a ship, follow the tutorial objectives until the first safe location or Base of Operations is available. The supplied beginner notes say bills and mortgage costs are collected every shift, with a shift lasting six in-game hours. They also warn that unpaid station bills should be settled before undocking.

The first repeatable progression loop is to obtain the required salvage permission, fly to a nearby derelict, scan before boarding, remove useful equipment, return the cargo, sell it, and pay ongoing costs. Electronics, motors, and undamaged equipment are described as stronger early targets than undifferentiated bulk scrap. Exact item prices and the best first hull are not included because the collected material does not verify them.

  1. Use REVIEW RESUME before spending another character year.
  2. Choose WORK ON SELF for a predictable skill or trait purchase.
  3. Choose SEEK ADVENTURE only when you accept a variable outcome.
  4. Treat SAVE SOME MONEY as a weak option based on the supplied community summary.
  5. Inspect ship choices carefully because selecting one ends character creation.

Protect your save before adding mods

Back up an important save before changing your mod setup. Check that each mod supports your current Ostranauts version, install every listed dependency, and follow the author’s instructions before launch. Older listings may target earlier game builds, so treat upload and update dates as useful signals rather than proof of compatibility. When the documentation is unclear, test the mod on a separate save first.

Use Steam Workshop to discover mods published for the Steam version, Nexus Mods to browse its wider Ostranauts archive, and Thunderstore for community packages, loaders, and mod-management tools. Before downloading, open the original listing and check the author, latest update, required dependencies, and installation notes. Community discussions can help you discover a mod, but its original download page should remain your compatibility reference.
